Clean laboratories

New Clean Suite

Sample preparation for trace metal analysis requires an extremely clean environment because the quantities of the element or elements of interest are extremely small (often less than a billionth of a gram). As a consequence, great care must be taken to prevent contamination of the samples. This includes preventing atmospheric dust, fibres from clothes, and corrosion from metal objects from coming into contact with the samples.

Preparation of samples from trace element work takes place in an ultraclean laboratory suite in which the air is repeatedly filtered to remove dust, and users wear special lab coats to contain dust and fibres from user’s clothes; the labs are also as far a possible constructed to be free of metal.
